SC Bayern President Marissa Pena Meets Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
At the Milk Cup 2008 Youth International Tournament, South Coast Bayern President Marissa Pena had the great opportunity to meet the tournament's opening guest of honor. The Norwegian national first gained fame during his startling performances as a substitute striker during the 1996-97 season with the "Red Devils", Manchester United. With 18 goals in his first season in the English Premier League, he soon was named by the media as the "Baby-faced Assassin" for his youthful looks and deadly finishing. He managed to rack up over 150 goals during his illustrious career with United, the most notable one was netting the winning goal during injury time against Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final. During the mid 2000s he suffered a string of injuries, influencing his decision to take on the role of coach of the Man United FC Reserve team in 2008.
Here is what SCB President Marissa Pena remembers about her encounter with the famous footballer.
How and where did you meet him?
After the welcoming parade in Corelaine, North Ireland, a reception dinner was held in which only head coaches and administrators were allowed to dine beside the famous footballer. Only one youngster from Argentina was allowed in, on the exception that his Argentinean coach needed an English translator. Every year they bring in a special guest, and every year since Bayern has been allowed to compete, everyone awaits to see what gift South Coast Bayern has with them.
What do you think is the most expected gift?
Anything related to David Beckham! Pictures, t-shirts, merchandise.. They really cherish him.
So what did you actually bring?
I brought back a David Beckham autographed jersey. They [Milk Cup committee members] really really liked it and they stopped the reception and held it up high and showed it to everyone. Later, they entrusted me to give him a framed picture of Beckham, which showed him accepting the Golden Boot award as a youth in the Milk Cup.
What did you do when you met him?
Gave him a big hug, he told me a joke, I laughed and then they [the media] took a picture.
What was the joke?
Ahahahaha. next question.
What are you looking forward to about this year's trip?
Going back and maintaining our status as a competent American team. We were gracisously accetpted to take part in the Milk Cup two years ago, which was a great honor because we were only the second American club team ever to play in it. We were able to secure a 2-2 tie with Manchester United in the tournament's opening game, and last year we were able to make it to the finals and face them again. Again, it's a great honor and privilege to be able to participate in a competition of such high caliber, and even more to have made friends and made a good reputation for ourselves. |
